The Wagyl, aka Rainbow Serpent, is the Dreamtime creature responsible for the creation of the Swan River. As he slithered along his body scoured out the course of the river. Occasionally he would stop for a rest and such spots are marked by small bays etc. Appropriately shaped piles of rocks are said to be his droppings and such sites are designated as Sacred sites by the aborigines. On one such location at Mounts Bay, the white man built his own sacred site, a brewery. It was built back in the bad old days, before anyone bothered with such things as aboriginal rights. They closed the brewery 20 years ago and the building fell into disrepair. Every time any attempt is made to refurbish the site, aboriginal protestors bring matters to a halt, demanding that the wagyl be left undisturbed. The last attempt 6-7 yrs ago, looked like succeeding and the exterior of the building was put right before once more the developers where forced to retreat, several million dollars out of pocket. Now we have a large empty building standing where we used to have a large empty ruin. Who said there was no such thing as progress? Dennis |
