Kuranda is a sleepy village that awakens at 9 am every day. The Sky Rail brings tourists over top of the rain forest to Kuranda. Liz and Allan and I took the 'Must See' tour. The Sky Rail is a tram, suspended on a cable high above the rain forest. You begin your journey at the front door of your accomodations. Check with the reception desk a day ahead of time to book the next day. A tour bus will pick you up and deposit you at either the train station or the Sky Rail. Passes and transportation are included in the package. At the Sky Rail site, it is near an aborigine venue, you enter a gondola which will take you to several 'way stations' enroute to Kuranda. At each one of the stops you can walk around on the wooden trails that exhibit displays of what is found in a rain forest. You then take another gondola for the next step of your journey. On arrival at Kuranda, the bus will meet you and take you on an excursion of mainstreet and tell you where you can receive a reduced price lunch. It will then leave you on mainstreet and pick you up at the train station or the Sky Rail. Generally, one takes either the Sky Rail or tourist train and rides the other on the return. Liz and Allan and I had lunch at The Frog restaurant which had a nice filipina waitress. Mainstreet is lined with tourist shops with the usual paraphenalia. At the train station which is very old, it is landscaped very well almost like a mini-botanical garden. The tourist train has cars with wall to wall bench seating, just like it was in the 1900s. Windows are open because it is hot. Don't overdress for anything in the tropics. You will be sorry if you do. On the way down, the train stops a few times to check the brakes and you can get off and see the falls or whatever. The day trip is long and you will probably be tired..but the chance to stretch your cramping legs is welcomed. Cairns is visible at various times during the trip and the view from the long bridge, just before entering Cairns, is spectacular. At the train station your bus is awaiting to take you back to your accomodations. A trip to the Cairns Botanical Gardens is worth the visit.
