Airely Beach is a good destination in Queensland where one can start an expedition either around there..or to Hamilton Island or the Great Barrier Reef. There are a lot of famous islands around there also, accessable by ferry. Airely Beach is a beachfront town, with mainstreet close. East of town, on the way to Shute Harbor is the airport and caravan park. We stayed at the caravan park. It was centrally located for us. Next door the airport had flight tours and down the road at Shute Harbor, one could fish from the pier or take the ferry to any of the islands or Hamilton Island. One should be aware that late night strolls to the toilet, could lead to a confrontation with the nocturnal fowl that roam the park. Tours can be booked at the front desk of most accomodations. Plan ahead at least a day in advance because the tours are popular and fill quickly. The evening before our trip to Hamilton Island, Liz, Allan and I went fishing from the pier at Shute Harbour. We caught a few small ones but enjoyed the sundown vista of the boats anchored in the harbour. The big boat behind Allan and I was the type of ferry that goes to the islands and the Great Barrier Reef. They are air conditioned and heated below decks with the option of sitting on the upper deck and enjoying the sun and the breeze for picture taking. The Hamilton tour we took, the bus from our accomodation, the ferry, rental golf cart, lunch and introductory tour by bus on arrival was included. The introductory tour allowed us to get our bearings and help plan where we wanted to return to. The nature exhibit was worth it, perhaps blase to those who had seen the fauna of Australia before, but presented well. I met an English girl on holiday at the hang gliding venue. Hamilton island is self contained with private villas owned by such notables as Paul McCartney. Employees either commute on the ferry, live on their own boats, or stay dormitory style. The church is popular for weddings, one of which was a "White" Japanese wedding. Japanese bring the whole family for these occasions and as you can see from the photo, it is lavish with Rolls and kaola. I would like to return.
