Entering Gympie from the south one finds the information center on the south side of town built near the parklands of Alford Park. The statue is a tribute to those who came, to seek and to find gold. Alford Park has a nice billibong with benches and tables so you can stop for a rest or cook something on the barbie. I was introduced to the first Muscovy ducks I had seen that are plentiful there. If one looks across the lake one can see tower and rigging of a gold mine header. That is the grounds of the Historical and Mining Museum. The museum has exhibits of memoribelia of mining history and tributes to those who served in the war. If one wishes to do a little panning or metal detecting for gold, the information center has fossicking permits which are necessary. They will direct you to the fossicking area and rent you tools if necessary. The caravan park at Gympie has a resident flock of lorikeets which they feed at 4 pm. If you love to see birds up close, be there at feeding time.
