As
we were driving from Liz's meeting toward South Bank, we passed this home
which was obviously very old. The front doors were double French, opening
onto a small porch and the twin oval corners that would give you a view
almost any direction. The roof coverings I saw were either corrugated
tiling or corrugated sheet metal, painted either red, green or tan. Other
older rural, Queenslander type homes, were elevated above ground level
on pilings and come equipped with a tank to hold runoff rain water...for
drinking. A lot of the rural outback doesn't have potable water but must
rely on rain and river water. The tanks let the water clarify.

After Liz's meeting at Kangaroo Point we were to meet Liz and Allan's daughter on the South Bank for lunch. The Griffith University Conservatorium, on the South Bank is well renown in the music world. South Bank was an exhibition site for one of the International Expositions. Those venues have been converted to side walk cafes, opal shops and arts and crafts booths. The atmosphere is like the river walk in San Antonio except this one has a beach, among the palms.
Doesn't the beach look like fun? It's called Kodak Beach...wonder why?...The buildings in the background, house the sidewalk cafes and opal shops.

Traversing the Brisbane River is so nice on the City Cats, the water taxi/ferry ran by the City of Brisbane. A $6 Aus pass is available which permits unlimited trips on both the bus and the City Cat. We took the City Cat across and down the river and some of the following pictures were taken during that ride.

Use the back arrow to view the Brisbane map again if necessary. The boat on the left is at the letter C on the map. The casino and entrance to the downtown mall, which is covered, is located at C also. The name of this boat is the Capt. Cook...not the original...of course. |

We traveled from X on the map to C on our way to Z. Sound confusing? On
the trip downstream, we passed several yachts moored at clubs or buoys
tethered in the River. Wouldn't it be great to live on one in this scenic
place, and take the dinghy to work in the morning?

Our destination is straight ahead. We leave the City Cat to explore downtown and the City Botanic Gardens. Do you see the reflection of the blue sky and clouds in the mirrored windows of the high rises? |
