The first gaol (jail) in the Swan River Colonies was built in 1831. It was called the Round House for it's shape. The cells all faced a courtyard with a well. It was used as a holding facility for Aboriginals waiting transport to Rottnest Island.
The
prisoners cells were dark and dank as the following two pictures illustrate.
