The Perth Adventure

Rottnest Island

The conference was over but Liz and I were going to stick around Perth so that we and several of the Parkinsn List members from Melbourne and the Holden's could return to Fremantle and take the ferry over to Rottnest Island and sight see.

My hosts, Dennis, Jo and family, were very gracious during my stay and we had one last group photo.

Rottnest Island is a small island off the coast from Fremantle, that was landed on by a Dutch Mariner in 1696. Upon seeing some rather large creatures that looked like rats, he named it Rottnest, which in Dutch is roughly translated into rat's nest. The creatures were not rats but marsupials that are called quokkas (pronounced qwakas). Most of the wildlife I saw, was more tolerant to tourists...when eating. This is a quokka.

Rottnest Island in Western Australia history has been used long ago as a prison for Aborigines, and during the Second World War as a line of defence (defense). The Round House in Freemantle was a holding facility for Aborigines awaiting transport to Rottnest Island.

Transportation, for the masses, over to the island either from downtown Perth, or from Fremantle is by air conditioned high speed ferry.

Once on the island, there are three forms of transportation, rental bike, bus tour, or walking. Since there are many kilometers of roads and walking paths, wear comfortable shoes.

Lighthouses are very vital to shipping entering and leaving Fremantle which is an international port.
