The Melbourne Experience

I came to Australia to acomplish two things, see and experience Australia, and to attend the Parkinson's Conference in Perth. Liz, who went to the Parkinson's Conference with me, and I were to have a lay over in Melbourne, so our friends from the Parkinsn List, Celia and Mary planned an excursion for that day, before we all boarded the plane for Perth.

I am involved with People With Parkinson's (PWP), through being the archivist for the Parkinson's List and The Parkinsn's Drug Database on the Internet, and through participation and co-founding the #Parkinsons Chat Channel on the Undernet. It seems like where ever I go, I am always at someone's keyboard, tweaking their email or chat settings.

The guy behind the scenes doesn't get much opportunity to be 'IN' the scene.

Celia and her husband Allan met Liz and I at the Melbourne airport, and took us around downtown Melbourne. It was a cloudy Spring-like day, with a few occasional showers.

The Flight from Coolangatta (Gold Coast) to Melbourne is about a 2 hour flight.

In the evening, we would be taking about a 3 hour flight to Perth.

Melbourne is a juxtaposition of old and new architecture, art and transportation.

Most places downtown are just a short walk from the tram lines which circle the city center.

We parked at the Queen Victoria Market and walked down to Latrobe to catch a tram (street car). The City Circle Tram is a free service that circles the downtown area. Another tram, the Tram Line, is a system that connects the suburbs with downtown for a fee.

The route in brown above, is the path we took to the National Gallery of Victoria. We left the City Circle Tram at the Yarra River and walked across to the Crown Casino and followed the river walkway. The route in green is the return path we took.

Since the waiting areas for trams are so small, you have to watch during the wait to stay behind the white line.
